From music sessions to outdoor adventure and CV advice, the North Benwell Youth Project runs a wide range of activity sessions to build skills and confidence. It works particularly with Czech and Slovak (Roma) young people, who are often isolated due to language and cultural barriers.
More than a place to spend time, NBYP is a valuable community hub. Its staff and volunteers also offer support and advice to parents and families in times of crisis, and with everyday issues such as universal credit, job applications and school admissions.
The project's ambition is to increase its detached, outreach work, offering opportunities to more young people and helping them to integrate into living in Newcastle. Investing in training a local young person in youth and community work is something the team has wanted to do for some time.
Being part of the wider Neighbourhood Youth Project gives the team more energy and a clearer vision of the work they wish to achieve in the future.
“This funding has given us security and stability which will allow us to develop the areas we have identified as a priority, and to increase our work reaching more young people.”
Margaret Ridley, Project Coordinator, North Benwell Youth Project
The Trust's support gives North Benwell the security and stability to develop its detached youth work and to train a local young person in youth and community work, something it had long wanted to do but could not fund.
In the project coordinator's words, the funding will allow the team to develop the areas they have identified as a priority: growing their detached work so that more young people can take part and integrate into life in Newcastle, and, at last, training a local young person in youth and community work — a plan held back until now by a lack of funding. Being part of the wider Neighbourhood Youth Project, she adds, gives the team more energy and a clearer vision of the work they wish to achieve in the future.
